  Twitter's free read-access API tier ended in July 2023. Read endpoints (timelines, search, user lookups) now require the Basic plan starting at $100/month. Independent apps like Apollo, Tweetbot, and Twitterrific shut down rather than absorb the cost.

  Reddit's free API tier was effectively killed in June 2023. Rate limits dropped to 100 queries/minute for OAuth and pricing climbed to $0.24 per 1,000 requests for higher volume. Apollo, RIF, BaconReader, and Sync shut down rather than pay an estimated $20M/year.

  Dark Sky was a beloved hyperlocal weather API, acquired by Apple in March 2020. New signups closed immediately and the API was fully shut off to non-Apple developers on December 31, 2022. Apple's WeatherKit replaces it, but is gated to Apple Developer accounts.

  Yahoo Finance's official public API was discontinued in 2017. Multiple unofficial endpoints have appeared since but break frequently. Tools like the yfinance Python library scrape the website and require constant maintenance to keep working.

  MetaWeather aggregated weather data from multiple sources into a clean, key-free API. The maintainer announced shutdown in April 2022, citing infrastructure costs and personal time constraints. The site went fully dark later that year.

  Weather Underground's popular developer API was sunset in stages after IBM acquired The Weather Company. The free tier closed to new signups in 2018, and the API was fully retired in early 2019. Personal Weather Station data eventually moved to a separate, restricted endpoint.
